Organize your contribution records

7 min readRoth Academy field notes

A contribution is money added under the rules of the plan. Correct records start with identifying the participant, year, contribution type, and source information.

01

Classify the contribution

Employee and employer contributions have different rules. Designated Roth contributions and pretax contributions also require appropriate tracking. The label used on a transfer does not determine eligibility.

02

Gather the right inputs

Business structure, compensation, other retirement plans, and applicable plan terms may affect the calculation. Use current-year guidance and qualified help for the actual amount and deadlines.

03

Document the completed action

Retain elections where required, calculations, deposit confirmations, and records of how amounts were classified. Keep a proposed calculation separate from a completed deposit.
